Year 5 is an exciting year in which children continue to develop their independence, confidence and resilience whilst taking on greater responsibility within the school community.

As pupils move into Upper Key Stage 2, they are encouraged to think critically, challenge themselves and develop a deeper understanding across the curriculum. Throughout the year, children build the knowledge, skills and character needed to prepare them successfully for Year 6 and beyond.

Year 5 is also a year rich in opportunities for leadership, personal development and memorable experiences.

What we learn

Year 5 encourages children to become increasingly reflective, independent and ambitious learners.

Throughout the year, there is a strong focus on:

  • Developing sophisticated reading and comprehension skills
  • Writing confidently for a wide range of purposes and audiences
  • Applying mathematical knowledge through reasoning and problem solving
  • Conducting scientific enquiries and investigations
  • Developing deeper historical and geographical understanding
  • Using subject-specific vocabulary accurately and confidently
  • Building resilience, independence and leadership skills

Within each subject, learning is organised around carefully planned units and key enquiry questions that encourage children to think critically, debate ideas and make meaningful connections across their learning.

Children’s learning is enriched through educational visits, practical experiences and high-quality texts which help bring learning to life.

Reading

Reading remains at the heart of learning in Year 5.

Children explore a wide range of high-quality texts and develop increasingly sophisticated skills in inference, vocabulary analysis, prediction and evaluation. They are encouraged to discuss literature thoughtfully and justify their ideas using evidence from the text.

Children continue to participate in our school reading challenge, where they are challenged to read a book each week from a carefully selected collection of year-group books. Reading achievements are celebrated each term through special certificates.

Home learning

Children are encouraged to develop strong organisational skills and take increasing responsibility for their learning.

Residential experience – Flatford Mill

One of the highlights of Year 5 is the residential visit to Flatford Mill.

The residential provides children with exciting opportunities to participate in outdoor learning, environmental studies and team-building activities in a beautiful natural setting.

Throughout the visit, children develop:

  • Independence
  • Resilience
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Confidence

The experience supports both curriculum learning and personal development and is often remembered as one of the most rewarding experiences of primary school.
