Year 6 is an exciting and memorable year that marks the final stage of your child’s primary school journey. Throughout the year, pupils are encouraged to become confident, independent and responsible young people who are ready for the opportunities and challenges of secondary school.

As the oldest pupils in the school, Year 6 children are role models for younger pupils and play an important part in the life of the Glenworth community. Alongside academic learning, there is a strong emphasis on leadership, personal development, responsibility and preparing for the future.

Year 6 is a year filled with exciting opportunities, memorable experiences and lasting memories.

What we learn

Year 6 provides opportunities for pupils to deepen their understanding across the curriculum whilst developing the skills needed for secondary education and beyond.

Throughout the year, there is a strong focus on:

  • Reading with confidence, fluency and critical understanding
  • Writing effectively for a range of audiences and purposes
  • Applying mathematical knowledge through reasoning and problem solving
  • Developing scientific enquiry and investigative skills
  • Deepening historical, geographical and cultural understanding
  • Using subject-specific vocabulary confidently and accurately
  • Developing leadership, resilience and independence

Within each subject, learning is organised around carefully planned units and key enquiry questions that encourage children to think critically, debate ideas and make meaningful connections across their learning.

Children’s learning is enriched through educational visits, practical experiences and high-quality texts which help bring learning to life.

Reading

Reading remains at the heart of learning in Year 6.

Children explore a wide range of challenging texts and develop their ability to analyse, evaluate and discuss literature in depth. Through reading, pupils expand their vocabulary, develop cultural awareness and strengthen their understanding across the wider curriculum.

Children continue to participate in our school reading challenge, where they are challenged to read a book each week from a carefully selected collection of year-group books. Reading achievements are celebrated each term through special certificates.

Home learning

Children are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their learning and develop effective study habits.

Year 6 pupils have access to:

  • Oxford Owl
  • Mathletics
  • EdShed
  • TT Rock Stars
  • Code.org

SATs and preparing for secondary school

During Year 6, children complete the national Key Stage 2 assessments (SATs).

Throughout the year, pupils are supported to build confidence and develop the knowledge and skills needed to achieve their potential. We place great importance on maintaining children’s wellbeing and ensuring they approach assessments positively and confidently.

Preparing for secondary school is also an important focus of Year 6. Through transition activities, visits and discussions, children are supported to feel excited and prepared for the next stage of their education.

Houses of Parliament and citizenship

One of the highlights of Year 6 is the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament.

Through workshops, guided tours and learning experiences linked to democracy and citizenship, children develop a deeper understanding of how laws are made, how decisions affect society and how they can make a positive contribution to their communities.

These experiences help pupils understand the importance of having a voice and participating actively in society.

Residential experience – Wales Farm

The Wales Farm Residential is one of the most memorable experiences of Year 6.

The residential provides opportunities for pupils to develop independence, resilience, teamwork and confidence whilst taking part in a range of outdoor and practical activities.

For many children, this experience becomes a highlight of their primary school journey and helps prepare them for the greater independence expected at secondary school.

End of year production and celebrations

The final year at Glenworth is full of opportunities to celebrate achievements and create lasting memories.

Year 6 pupils take part in an end-of-year production, special events and celebrations which allow them to showcase their talents, reflect on their achievements and celebrate their time at Glenworth with friends, staff and families.
